How to Clean Your Skylight?

by admin

Cleaning a skylight can be challenging, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be done quickly and easily. Here are some tips on how to get this done:

  1. Get your tools ready
    To properly clean your skylight, you’ll need a bucket, a soft-bristled brush, a squeegee, a sponge, and a cleaning solution. Avoid using abrasive or acidic cleaners, as those can scratch or damage the skylight and this will cause more problems for you. Before cleaning your skylight, make sure to get;
A long mop/broom or an extension rod. This makes cleaning those hard-to-reach places on your skylight much easier.
A soft, absorbent towel or microfibre cloth is useful for drying damp areas.
Strings, duct tape, or rubber bands for holding your cleaning rag in place.
Cleaning agents like mild dish soap, distilled white vinegar, and plastic tarp.
  2. Prepare and apply the cleaning solution
A good way to prepare your cleaning mix would be to get some warm water in a bucket and pour in some of your mild dish soap. Then, you agitate the mixture to form a homogenous one and you have your cleaning solution. To begin cleaning your skylight, dip your sponge into the cleaning mix and apply it to the skylight. Remember to cover up areas you don’t want your solution on.
  3. Check for Manufacturer Guidelines
Before embarking on the task of cleaning your skylight, consult the manufacturer and be informed of specific guidelines. Different types of skylights may require different cleaning methods or some special care or the other, so it is important to make sure you are using the appropriate products and techniques.
  4. Sweep first
A common mistake many DIY skylight cleaners make is going straight to the washing process. This method has been proven to only increase dust deposition on the corners of your skylight. To avoid this, it’s always best to use a soft dry brush to remove particulate matter from your skylight’s surface before applying your cleaning solution.
  5. Consider the weather factor
Many homeowners are under the notion that cleaning their skylights under hot weather conditions would make things easier for them. Unfortunately, the total opposite is the case. The thing with cleaning your skylight under hot conditions is that the intense heat dries the water on the glass too quickly, resulting in the creation of streaks and lines on the glass. To prevent this from happening, make sure you clean your skylight when the weather is cooler.
  6. Think Structural Integrity
Before cleaning skylights in Central Coast, you should always ensure that the structural integrity of the skylight is one you can trust before you start cleaning. If the integrity is compromised, you might end up damaging the skylight, or worse, getting injured.
  7. Remove furniture
If there are any furnishings under the skylight, it is best to remove or move them before you start cleaning.
  8. Lay a drop cloth
Before you start with the cleaning, place a plastic drop cloth or several bath towels directly under the skylight to catch any leaks or drips.
  9. Use a stronger cleaner
Reports have shown that skylights located above a room that normally produces a lot of smoke, like the kitchen, are much dirtier than those above the living room or bedroom. To remove such tough stains, we advise you to use a stronger cleaning solution. A good way to make your solution stronger would be to add some ammonia or larger amounts of vinegar.
  10. Safety first
We can’t stress the importance of having standard PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) on you during cleaning. You may not know it but cleaning your skylight unprotected exposes you to dangers from harsh chemicals like ammonia and small glass shards. We recommend at least having your gloves and overall on to keep yourself safe from danger.
  11. Use a soft-bristled brush
A soft-bristled brush, such as a microfiber brush, will help you scrub the skylight without scratching it. This is especially important when cleaning old skylights as their structural integrity can not be the same as that of recent ones. A soft-bristled brush also helps prevent lines and streaks from forming on the glass pane of your skylight.
  12. Consider calling a professional when cleaning gets tough
We’d hate to break it to you but cleaning skylights can be very tedious, especially when it’s been ages since your last clean. When the time comes for intense cleaning, calling a professional to clean your skylights in Central Coast is the best option available for you.
